What is oil mist and how does it form?

Oil mist is the aerosol which forms when oil is used for cooling or lubricating during the machining of metal and some plastic components. Oil mist forms when the oil gets in contact with the hot machined surface, vaporises, and condenses as sub-micron particles.

The oil mist can be made of a oil or a mix of oil and water emulsions. Mineral oil-based metalworking fluids are commonly called neat cutting oils or straight oils.

Prolonged and repeated exposure to oil particles can be harmful to health, meaning that good ventilation must be installed. Oil emulsions normally contain 90-95% water and the remaining is soluble oil.

The Nederman NOM 4 is a compact oil mist filter, suitable for enclosed cabinet single CNC machines. This extraction unit can be easily installed and enables maximum flexibility in the workshop.

This filtering unit is commonly installed on top of the machine. The Nederman NOM 4 is also suitable for emulsion mist.
