Introduction
Monifieth Learning Campus, a flagship Passivhaus educational facility in Angus, Scotland, was developed to provide a state-of-the-art, sustainable learning environment for over 1,200 pupils. As part of this transformative project, AES (Active Energy Solutions) was appointed by Robertson Construction to deliver the full design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the Craft, Design & Technology (CDT) department—including all specialist equipment, workbenches, and the industry-leading AES C-VAC extraction system.
Scope of Works
AES’s scope encompassed:
- Full 3D design and layout of the CDT department, including workshops, technician areas, and maker spaces.
- Supply, installation, and commissioning of all machinery, workbenches, and storage solutions.
- Installation and commissioning of the AES C-VAC centralised wood dust extraction system, ensuring compliance with the highest standards of health, safety, and energy efficiency.
- Coordination with Robertson Construction and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration with the wider campus build.

Project Coordination
AES worked collaboratively with Robertson Construction, the main contractor, and other project partners to deliver a future-ready CDT department:
- Utilised BIM-compliant 3D CAD design for precise coordination with architects and M&E teams.
- Scheduled works to align with the campus construction programme, minimising disruption and ensuring timely completion.
- Managed all mechanical and electrical interfaces for seamless integration of extraction and workshop systems.
- Delivered user training and familiarisation for teaching and technical staff.

AES C-VAC Extraction System – A Full Department Solution
The AES C-VAC system is a market-leading, centralised wood dust extraction solution, specifically developed for educational workshops and suitable for large single or multiple room department:
- Simultaneous Extraction: Capable of extracting dust from multiple machines at once, with automatic valves linked to machine operation.
- Plug-in Points: Easy connection for portable tools and cleaning attachments, supporting both fixed and mobile equipment.
- Energy Efficiency: Variable speed drive ensures the fan only operates at the required power, reducing energy consumption and noise.
- Safety & Compliance: ATEX-certified, COSHH-compliant, and installed to HSE and DSEAR standards, with explosion relief venting as standard.
- Maintenance: Dust is collected centrally in a 240L trolley-mounted bag, with automatic filter cleaning and bag full indicators for easy servicing.
- Noise Control: Quiet in operation and compact in design with efficient controls allows for reduced noise exposure for staff.

Conclusion
AES’s delivery of the CDT department at Monifieth Learning Campus demonstrates our commitment to creating safe, efficient, and inspiring technical learning environments. The integration of the AES C-VAC extraction system ensures the highest standards of air quality, safety, and sustainability—supporting the campus’s Passivhaus and Net Zero ambitions.
