Introduction
Dunfermline Learning Campus is a landmark educational development in Fife, Scotland, bringing together St Columba’s RC High School, Woodmill High School, and Fife College into a single, state-of-the-art, low-carbon campus. As part of this ambitious project, AES (Active Energy Solutions) was appointed to deliver a comprehensive FFE package for the Fife College area of the campus across all technical and science departments, supporting the campus’s vision for innovative, safe, and sustainable learning environments.
Scope of Works
AES’s remit covered the supply, delivery, and installation of specialist FFE equipment for all technical and science departments, including:
- Full project management and coordination with the main contractor and M&E providers.
- Commissioning of all equipment and systems required.
- User familiarisation and end-user consultation.
- Integration of all supply and installation elements into a single-source package for streamlined delivery.

Project Coordination
AES’s dedicated project team worked closely with the main contractor, M&E providers, and a range of specialist subcontractors to ensure seamless integration of all FFE elements. This included:
- Detailed 3D design and consultation for workshop layouts, ensuring optimal workflow, safety, and compliance.
- Coordination of mechanical and electrical works, with all installations supervised and progressed by AES’s experienced, accredited engineers.
- Rigorous health and safety management, with all AES engineers holding relevant industry certifications and qualifications.
- Regular progress meetings and transparent communication with all stakeholders to ensure timely delivery and minimal disruption to the wider construction programme.

FFE Equipment Supplied, Installed and Commissioned
AES delivered a full suite of FFE solutions tailored to the needs of each department. This included sourcing highly specific technical equipment, specialist science equipment and heavy duty fabrication machinery:
Joinery Machinery
- Supply and installation of industry-standard woodworking machinery, including saws, planers, moulders and sanders.
- Integration of AES’s centralised wood dust extraction system, providing safe and effective dust control for all joinery machines at source.
- Coordination of multiple sub-contractors and manufacturers across the department ensuring that diverse and complete curriculum can be delivered with this equipment empowering staff to provide the best education in Scotland.
CNC / Metalworking Machinery
- Installation of high-precision CNC milling and turning equipment, supporting advanced manufacturing and engineering curricula.
- Metalworking lathes, drills, and fabrication tools, and connected with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems where appropriate for fume and particulate control.
- Bespoke extraction solutions for welding and hot works areas, ensuring compliance with COSHH and HSG 258 guidance.
Electrical Workshop Equipment & Benches
- Custom-designed electrical benches with integrated power, low-voltage modules, lighting and soldering stations for each student.
- On-tip solder extraction and compressed air outlets for safe electronics assembly and testing.
- Single and three phase multi outlets for staff demonstrations and teaching requirements providing 110, 230 and 415V supplies.
- Full commissioning and certification of all electrical and LEV systems.
Special Control / Instrumentation & Experiment Equipment
- Supply and installation of specialist control testing equipment, instrumentation rigs, and experiment benches for technical education.
- Integration with campus-wide building management and safety systems for complex machinery.
- User training and familiarisation sessions for teaching staff.
Fabrication & Welding Equipment
- Provision of metalworking equipment, grinding equipment and welding booths each with dedicated fume extraction benches and a centralised filtration unit.
- Installation of welding booths custom fabricated to suit the department and completed with welding curtains installed by AES.
- Commissioning and performance testing to ensure effective control of hazardous fumes and particulates within the area.
Science Lab Technical Equipment
- Supply and fit-out of laboratory products, fume cupboards, and specialist science equipment.
- Installation of LEV systems for chemical handling and experiment areas & provision of filtered storage solutions.
- Full commissioning of required equipment and LEV systems including the user product familiarisation on safe operation and maintenance of all technical equipment.
Pan Mill Concrete Equipment
- Installation of pan mill and associated loading equipment for concrete grinding, processing and crushing equipment for construction and civil engineering courses.
- Integration with dust and fume extraction systems to ensure a safe working environment in this dedicated area.
