Project Overview
AES Ltd successfully completed the full strip-out, design, supply, installation, commissioning and LEV testing of a new vehicle exhaust fume extraction system at a Council’s Underwood Road Vehicle Depot in Paisley. The turnkey project delivered a modern HSG258-compliant LEV solution serving eight vehicle maintenance bays handling cars, vans, commercial vehicles and fleet vehicles.
The Challenge
The existing exhaust extraction infrastructure had reached the end of its operational life and required replacement to ensure effective control of diesel exhaust emissions and compliance with COSHH requirements. The Council required a complete solution including removal of legacy ductwork, fans and discharge stacks while maintaining workshop functionality and safety.
AES Scope of Works
- Removal and strip-out of existing extraction equipment
- Removal of redundant ductwork, fans and discharge stacks
- LEV system design & consultation
- Supply of vehicle exhaust extraction equipment
- Mechanical and electrical installation
- Commissioning and system balancing with frequency inverters and pressure transducer equipment
- P601 LEV Commissioning TExT and performance verification in accordance with HSG258
- Operator familiarisation and handover documentation

Technical Solution
AES installed two dedicated vehicle exhaust LEV systems at this facility designed to control diesel and petrol engine exhaust emissions at source. The systems incorporated galvanised spiral safe-seal ductwork, centrifugal extract fans, high-level discharge stacks, balancer hose sytems, retractable hose reels, high-temperature exhaust hoses and operator-friendly control systems.
LEV System Configuration
The installation consisted of:
System VE-LEV-01
- 3 extraction points.
- 150mm exhaust hose systems.
- Two dedicated balancer systems for smaller vehicle bays placed centrally on each ramp to allow for cars and smaller vans to be positioned as operators see fit
- Single wall mounted hose reel with extended high temperature length of hose for larger HGV’s, buses and recycling vehicle
- Custom nozzle storage “holster” created from solid HILTI strut and fixings by AES
System VE-LEV-02
- 5 total extraction points with room for expansion
- Combination of 100mm, 125mm, & 150mm extraction hoses.
- Controlled with frequency inverter and pressure trnasducer
- Each extraction point was equipped with Heavy-duty balancer retractable hose systems, Crush-resistant EPDM/PP exhaust hoses and high-temperature exhaust hose sections rated to 300°C.
- Clamp-on rubber exhaust nozzles with shut-off dampers. Ideal for easy fitting and storage.
- User-friendly operation suitable for daily workshop activities.
The ductwork system utilised galvanised spiral steel safe-seal ducting, designed to maintain transport velocities in accordance with HSG258 recommendations for fume and smoke extraction applications. Our external stacks for this system are erected to a safe exhaust height and constructed with a solid box frame for durability in all weather conditions.



Compliance, Commissioning & Testing
The systems were designed in accordance with HSG258 guidance and commissioned by competent LEV engineers. Airflow measurements, system balancing, performance verification and user training were completed before handover. Full documentation, logbooks and operating manuals were provided to support ongoing COSHH compliance.
