Project Overview
A precision engineering firm required an effective oil mist extraction solution to improve air quality, protect operators, and ensure ongoing compliance with COSHH and HSG258 guidance across several CNC machines at their Glasgow facility. Active Energy Solutions (AES) was appointed to design, supply, install, and commission a complete Filtermist oil mist Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) solution tailored to each machine. As part of the installation, AES fitted a Filtermist F‑SAVE system to each oil mist extraction unit, providing automated process control and additional protection against oil mist generation without effective extraction.
The Challenge
High-performance precision CNC machining using soluble coolants was generating oil mist that posed risks to operator health, machine reliability, and workplace cleanliness. This business needed a proven extraction system that would:
- Capture oil mist at source
- Integrate seamlessly with existing CNC equipment
- Meet UK health & safety legislation
- Be reliable, low maintenance, and energy efficient

The AES Solution
AES delivered a fully engineered Filtermist oil mist extraction solution across multiple CNC machines, including Mori-Seiki, Makino, and Doosan machining centres.
The project included:
- Correctly sized Filtermist FX Series units selected using enclosure volume and air-change calculations
- A mix of direct-mounted and floor-stand-mounted systems to suit machine layouts
- High-efficiency afterfilters and Filtermist F-Monitors for airflow and performance visibility
- Installation of energy saving F-SAVE for Guaranteed LEV operation – CNC machines cannot run without effective oil mist extraction in place
- Full mechanical and electrical installation by AES engineers
- BOHS P601-qualified LEV commissioning, testing, and documentation in line with COSHH 2002 and HSG258
Each system was commissioned with airflow measurements, smoke clearance testing, and a detailed commissioning report supplied for the client’s health and safety records.

Filtermist F-SAVE Installation for Energy Saving & Efficiency
Each system on this project was fitted with the new Filtermist F-SAVE solution. Filtermist F‑SAVE is an energy‑control accessory designed specifically for Filtermist oil mist extractors. It uses dedicated sensors connected to the machine’s coolant pump to detect when mist‑generating processes are taking place.
When the coolant pump is active, the F‑SAVE system automatically switches the Filtermist unit on. When machining stops and the coolant pump is inactive, the extractor is automatically switched off after an agreed post programme duration — ensuring extraction runs only when it is required.

Key Benefits of F-SAVE Integration
- Significant energy savings by up to 80% – preventing unnecessary extractor run time during idle periods
- Reduced operating costs and carbon footprint, supporting sustainability targets
- Automatic operation with no reliance on manual switching, reducing the risk of extractors being left on unnecessarily by operators / between shifts
- Standalone installation that does not require access to or modification of machine tool electronics
- Guaranteed compatibility with Filtermist FX Series systems and suitability for retrofit applications
By linking each Filtermist system directly to the coolant pump, AES ensured that the CNC machines operate only when effective oil mist extraction is in place. This engineered safeguard helps maintain a clean, safe working environment while reinforcing best practice in local exhaust ventilation design.
Combined with correctly sized Filtermist units, F‑Monitor airflow indication, and full LEV commissioning, the F‑SAVE installation delivers a robust, compliant, and operator‑friendly oil mist control solution for CNC machining operations.

Results & Benefits
The completed installation delivered immediate and long-term benefits:
- Improved operator health & safety by effectively removing hazardous oil mist at source
- COSHH-compliant LEV systems with full commissioning and certification
- Cleaner machines and workshop environment, reducing slip hazards and mist build-up
- Reduced maintenance and downtime through reliable, correctly sized extraction
- Energy efficiency, with clean air returned to the workspace rather than exhausted outside
- Reduced energy costs – by integrating F‑SAVE with each Filtermist unit, AES ensured that the precision CNC machines operate only when effective oil mist control is in operation by interlocking with the machine coolant pump
- Visual performance monitoring via Filtermist F-Monitor, helping operators identify servicing requirements early

Why Filtermist Oil Mist Extraction for CNC Machines?
Filtermist oil mist extractors use centrifugal separation technology to remove oil and coolant mist directly from CNC machine enclosures. Captured oil is returned to the machine for reuse, while clean air is safely returned to the workshop. This makes Filtermist systems ideal for CNC machining centres, lathes, grinding machines, and turning operations.
When designed, installed, and commissioned by AES, Filtermist systems provide a complete, compliant, and future-proof LEV solution for modern manufacturing environments.
