BOFA's New Shield for 3D Printing Operations

The new BOFA Shield is a self-assembly 3D print enclosure that helps limit exposure to emissions while helping to maintain a stable temperature environment, most important for additive manufacturing processes.

The Shield is designed to accommodate open-framed printers commonly used in environments like dental laboratories, schools, colleges and universities, design shops and small-scale print farms. It helps protect against temperature variations that can compromise the quality of the product in extrusion-based processes, such as those caused by drafts from open windows or doors.

The enclosure is intentionally designed to be oversized to facilitate effortless print retrieval and consumable replacement. It is compatible with various Donaldson BOFA fume extraction systems, enhancing containment and reducing operator exposure to airborne nanoparticles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) typically emitted during processes such as material extrusion, resin-based 3D printing, and post-processing operations

The Shield is supplied as a flat-pack kit and can be assembled in eight straightforward steps. It features a robust metal casing combined with clear acrylic panels to ensure optimal print visibility. The design includes dual access points positioned at the top and front for operational flexibility. It is fully configurable offering multiple feed-through options and supports adjustable door orientation to accommodate various workspace layouts and user preferences.

“This new robust enclosure will not only help to maintain temperature and airflow stability in open-framed printers, it will also contribute to a more comfortable workplace environment by reducing the odour and noise associated with additive manufacturing. Shield is ideal for an agile working environment, weighing only 20 kilos, so it can easily be moved around to where it is needed. It can be bundled with Donaldson BOFA 3D PrintPRO 3 and V 600 extraction systems.” – Bruno Cinto, Product Specialist at Donaldson BOFA
